Stendal, March 18, 2025 \u2013 Mercer Holz<\/a> has provided the Hanseatic City of Stendal with more than 3,000 hardwood and coniferous trees for the Stendal city forest. The trees were donated by Mercer Holz as part of the \u201cGrowing Forests, Growing Future<\/a>\u201d initiative. With this long-term program, Mercer is supporting climate-resilient reforestation of German forest areas that have been weakened and destroyed in recent years by severe drought and bark beetle infestation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis area of about one hectare was previously home to larch trees that the larch bark beetle destroyed due to the drought,\u201d explains Katja D\u00f6ge from the Nord\u00f6stliche Altmark Forestry Office. \u201dThis particular site offers ideal conditions for creating a mixed forest, which helps to spread the risk of climate change, fosters biodiversity and is ecologically beneficial.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mercer donated deciduous trees such as wild service trees, sycamore maples, black walnuts, wild pears, and 450 coastal firs. \u201cThe mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees improves soil quality and water storage capacity compared to pure coniferous forests, thus significantly contributing to climate protection,\u201d says Marcel Kraatz, timber purchaser at Mercer Holz.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last 450 trees were put in the ground today during the planting campaign. Bastian Sieler, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Stendal, and Martin St\u00f6hr, Managing Director of Mercer Holz, also took part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayor Sieler said: \u201cThe planting campaign will help us renew and maintain our city forest for future generations. A big thank you to Mercer Holz for their support.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cGrowing Forests, Growing Future\u201d initiative was launched by Mercer to support forest owners in Germany who have been damaged by drought, insects and other natural disasters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cForests are not just a source of raw materials for us; we also want to strengthen their role as a habitat, a place of recreation and a natural carbon sink,\u201d emphasizes Martin St\u00f6hr. \u201dWe want to draw attention to the worrying state of our forests, but also help to preserve the forest for future generations by donating forest plants.\u201d Mercer has been organizing such planting events since 2023 together with partners such as forest owners and tree nurseries.<\/span><\/p>\n
